The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.
The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of Primary education, Four years of Junior High School, and Two years of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship to 12 offers a more balanced approach to learning that will enable children to acquire and master lifelong learning skills (as against a congested curriculum). It will help in freeing parents of the burden of having to spend for college just to make their children employable.
The current curriculum will be decongested to allow for mastery of learning. In Grades 11 and 12 (HS Years 5 and 6), core subjects like Math, Science and English will be strengthened. Specializations in the students’ areas of interest will also be offered. Right now, a technical working group has formulated the new curriculum framework, standards, and competencies for K to 12. Experts from CHED, TESDA, and other stakeholders are part of this working group. After this, the changes in terms of subjects added, removed, and enhanced will be clearer.
Currently, 86 percent of five-year-old children attend kindergarten school. Under the K to 12 program, DepEd aims that 98 percent of five-year-old children will be in kindergarten by June 2011.

The DepEd intends to implement Senior High School education by school year 2016-2017.
UPDATES:
The new curriculum for Grade 1 and Grade 7 (High School Year 1) is being implemented in SY 2012-2013 and will progress in the succeeding school years, Teachers will be given sufficient in-service training to implement this program. The pre-service training for aspiring teachers will also be modified to conform to the requirements of the program. There will be no additional workload due to the K to 12 program. The Magna Carta for Public School Teachers provides that teachers should only teach up to six hours a day.
Buenavista National High School is already implementing this K to 12 Program( SEC Curriculum). Teacher’s of the First year curriculum (now Grade 7 Curriculum) has undergone seminars before classes had started. This is to ensure that the K to 12 Program would work out great. Teachers were trained and informed what subjects they will tackle when the school year opens. The Department of Education and Buenavista National High School the has also distributed some Textbooks like Science and Edukasyon sa Pagpakatao. This is to help the students learn their lessons and in order for them to have an advance study about certain topics. Some subjects like Araling Panlipunan, Filipino, T.L.E., and Distribute Modules about what would be taught every grading period, since the approach is already modular.
K12 Features
THE REVISED BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM
The Revised Basic Education Curriculum (RBEC) is on its 7th year of implementation this school year 2005-2006 with slight modifications, with emphasis to rubrics/student performance as basis of grading system. Teachers are required to prepare their syllabus based on the objectives of the revised Basic Education Curriculum. Lesson plans were also patterned and organized to meet the objectives of the implemented curriculum. All test items; tables of specifications were prepared and/or updated. Demonstration teachings were conducted for staff development during school level workshop. Department heads make periodic observation of classes to monitor the implementation of the RBEC. Integration method, collaborative teaching, peer teaching, team teaching, motor activities, visual as well as oral activities in classes were noted and observed. Mentoring is also being practiced.
POLICY GUIDELINES
Implementation of the Curriculum : Time Allotment and Unit Credits
1. BEC shall be continued for school year 2006-2007 2. School’s implementation of the BEC shall focus on the promotion of life long learning and service among stakeholders with focus on shared thrusts towards peace and developing/improving school performance in a climate of integration and curriculum intervention.
BEC consists of Five learning areas, English, Science, Mathematics and Filipino are the tool subjects and the fifth one which consists of four component areas such as Social Studies, Technology and Livelihood Education, MAPEH (Music, Arts, P.E. and Health) known as MAKABAYAN. In these compound areas, actual experiences of the students were considered.
Delivery of the Curriculum
Policy on Bilingual Education was considered in the delivery of the curriculum. Filipino will be the medium of instruction for subjects like Math, Science, English and T.L.E. while Filipino will be the medium of instruction for component areas of MAKABAYAN (which nclude MAPEH, Values Education, Araling Panlipunan) and Filipino.
Grading System
The implementing guidelines on the performance based grading system will be used continually for S.Y. 2006-2007
Test design of 60% basic items, 30% more advance items and 10% difficult items.
Use of rubrics as scoring guide shall continue in order to assess performance.
